We design, build, operate, and sell stratospheric balloon systems, and the data we collect supports a wide range of applications, from real-time wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. Our technology is also employed by government customers including the Department of Defense (DoD), NASA, and others. Urban Sky sends flight vehicles to the stratosphere on a weekly basis.

About The Role:
Urban Sky is developing multiple embedded systems that are used in our stratospheric flight vehicles, and in their testing on the ground. These electronic systems are unique in that they need to be extremely lightweight, and operate in the harsh environment of the stratosphere where temperatures are very cold and in a near-space vacuum. We are looking for a well-rounded electrical engineer who has substantial hands-on experience designing and building electronics used in electromechanical systems. Experience designing electronics for flight systems like small drones would be a major plus. This person should have the ability to design PCB assemblies, test PCB assemblies and work with design engineers to do full system tests with real hardware. A typical urban sky flight system is relatively small (weighing less than 6 lbs) and is manufactured almost entirely at our manufacturing facility in Denver, CO. A strong set of past projects, preferably including hardware assembled and tested by the applying engineer is a major plus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ground-up electrical system development, including high speed digital PCB design, motor/actuator controllers, DC/DC converters, and wireless communication devices
- Utilize ECAD development tools (we use Altium for PCB design and OnShape for mechanical integration, but experience with any major platform is perfectly adequate)
- Build, debug, verify and integrate electro-mechanical systems
- Support flight testing of electrical systems in the field
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of design engineering experience, preferably including substantial hands-on work
- Highly proficient at Electrical System Design
- Integrated/embedded electronics design experience
Nice-to-Haves/Preferred Skills:
- Start-up experience
- Experience with Linux environments
- 3D printing experience, including design for 3D printed parts
- Experience with remote comm systems similar to the Iridium satellite network
- Experience with Inertial Measurement Units
- Experience with optical sensors

Urban Sky is required to post this salary range per Colorado law. Your salary will be determined based on your abilities and experience.
