Position Summary
The Loss Control Specialist provides loss control service to clients located within a defined region. Primary mission is to fulfill client service responsibilities as outlined in our Client Service Agreement with the client and reduce the financial loss in our workers compensation program by recommending hazard/exposure controls, assisting with the implementation of effective safety programs and providing safety awareness training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive hazard assessments for the underwriting department, evaluating risk acceptability and supporting decisions related to policy issuance and renewal.
- Perform onsite safety surveys and detailed client interviews to identify hazards, operational risks, and potential exposures associated with clients’ business activities.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing client controls addressing identified hazards and operational exposures.
- Develop customized client health and safety programs and support clients through implementation and ongoing compliance.
- Prepare and submit detailed written recommendations outlining effective and practical controls to mitigate identified hazards and exposures.
- Identify underperforming clients from a risk, safety, and loss-experience perspective.
- Recommend placement of clients on risk improvement programs or potential termination based on safety performance and risk profile.
- Deliver safety services and client training in accordance with established client service agreements.
- Document findings from all onsite client inspections in alignment with established loss control level guidelines.
- Provide clients with guidance and interpretation of applicable OSHA regulations to support regulatory compliance.
- Conduct accident investigations for significant losses, review accident and claim reports, and serve as a liaison between clients and claims representatives for follow-up and resolution.
- Coordinate claim management activities with the Claims Manager as needed to ensure effective handling and communication.
- Regular, on-site attendance is an essential job function due to the need for secure access to systems, collaboration on sensitive technical matters, participation in operational meetings, and hands-on involvement in activities that cannot be performed remotely without compromising security, efficiency, or effectiveness.
- Frequent domestic travel will be required to attend team onsite meetings, client visits, customer events, industry conferences, and training sessions. This may include air travel, ground transportation (including cars, taxis, or rideshare services), and in some cases potential public transportation.
- Will participate in special projects assigned by the SVP or VP of Loss Control.
- Give advisement on client safety practices during annual Client review.
- Build, maintain and promote relationships with team members, peers across disciplines, and all other company team members ensuring effective coordination of communications and services affecting clients.
- Attend webinars and training to stay up to date on best practices related to the company and department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize effectively and perform under pressure in dynamic environments.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with clients, carriers, and associates at all levels of responsibility.
- Strong understanding of relevant professional and industry standards, practices, and regulatory expectations.
- Solid technical aptitude to identify, analyze, and present data critical to loss control and risk-management activities.
- Highly motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic; capable of working independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability and results.
Education & Experience
- College degree or equivalent combination of experience, skills, education (including other relevant non-traditional degree programs, certifications, or job training programs) preferred.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in safety and health.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and demonstrated ability to learn other applications as needed.
- This role requires a valid, non-restrictive driver’s license as it involves regular travel to client sites and company locations.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
OSHA 510 / 511 and a university designated safety certificate or equivalent work experience as deemed by the SVP of Loss Control
