Job Purpose
The SALT Staff Accountant supports state and local tax (SALT) compliance activities for a multijurisdictional telecommunications organization. This role ensures accurate, timely, and well-documented compliance with sales/use, franchise, regulatory, and property tax requirements. Responsibilities include audit readiness, nexus management, and coordination with external tax consultants as the business expands.

The SALT Staff Accountant supports state and local tax (SALT) compliance activities for a multijurisdictional telecommunications organization. This role ensures accurate, timely, and well-documented compliance with sales/use, franchise, regulatory, and property tax requirements. Responsibilities include audit readiness, nexus management, and coordination with external tax consultants as the business expands.
Responsibilities
- Track, validate, and maintain vendor exemption certificates to prevent inaccurate tax charges.
- Partner with Billing to collect, review, and retain customer tax-exempt and reseller exemption certificates.
- Prepare and provide reporting and support schedules to external consultants for state and local tax filings (excluding income tax).
- Provide OPSTATS detail and review USAC Form 499 for completeness and accuracy.
- Reconcile tax liability general ledger accounts monthly to support month-end close.
- Assist with nexus studies, state registrations, and compliance for new products and expanded network footprint.
- Maintain tax calendars and ensure compliance with filing deadlines.
- Support responses to audits, notices, and information requests with proper documentation.
- Monitor jurisdictional tax rate changes and update ERP system for accurate use tax calculations.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Billing, Revenue, AP, and external advisors for proper tax treatment of transactions.
- Assist with daily, monthly, and year-end accounting operations and ad hoc tax projects.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a multistate compliance environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for internal and external stakeholders.
- Highly motivated, self-directed, and collaborative team player.
- Professional demeanor with strong internal customer service mindset.
- 2+ years of accounting or tax-related experience preferred.
- Exposure to state and local tax compliance strongly preferred.
- Experience with multijurisdictional or multi-entity organizations preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and ERP system experience required.
- Telecommunications or regulated industry experience a plus.
