Position Summary

A Coax Splicer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of coaxial cable networks used for telecommunications services, including internet, TV, and voice. This role involves working with aerial, underground, and building-entry coax systems to ensure strong signal quality and reliable service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Splicing

  • Perform coaxial cable splicing, including cutting, stripping, connector installation, and signal optimization.
  • Install new coax systems in aerial, underground, or inside-building environments.
  • Build and repair coaxial trunks, feeders, and distribution lines.
  • Perform node segmentation, balancing, and activation tasks.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Diagnose and resolve signal issues such as ingress, egress, noise, and impedance mismatches.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on coaxial plant and related equipment.
  • Locate and repair damaged or degraded coax lines, connectors, and amplifiers.
  • Use test equipment (e.g., signal level meters, spectrum analyzers, TDRs) to troubleshoot network performance.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate records of splicing activities, signal levels, and equipment used.
  • Follow established safety practices, construction standards, and company procedures.
  • Read and interpret network prints, plant maps, and engineering schematics.
  • Communicate work status, issues, and progress to supervisors and team leads.

Field Work

  • Operate bucket trucks, ladders, and hand tools safely in various weather conditions.
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and around traffic or active construction sites.
  • Coordinate with other technicians, contractors, and engineers on project tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with coaxial cable systems in a telecom, cable, or fiber environment.
  • Proficiency with coax splicing tools and equipment (coring tools, compression tools, meters).
  • Strong understanding of RF technology, signal flow, and HFC plant structure.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and network blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards (OSHA, NESC, traffic control).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass background checks and drug screening.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and handle equipment safely.
  • Comfortable climbing ladders and working at heights or in tight spaces.
  • Capable of long shifts outdoors in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in HFC or broadband network construction.
  • Certifications such as NCTI, SCTE, or equivalent.
  • Experience with fiber splicing is a plus.
