The Role:
The Loop DevOps engineers have strong skills in cloud technologies, containerization, automation tools, DevSecOps, and configuration management. Our projects and decisions are guided by two ultimate goals: to architect a resilient and secure platform, and to make our fellow engineers’ lives easier.
The Core DevOps team’s main role is building and maintaining the infrastructure for Loop’s applications. We also work together with Embedded DevOps Engineers as well as with our partner-team, DevEx, to build a seamless developer experience for Loop’s Software Engineers. Last but not least, all teams within the Engineering Department - Core DevOps included - share the responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of Loop’s applications (think monitoring and incident response).
Members of the Core DevOps team have a strong pull to leave the world (or at the very least, the software industry) better than they found it. When they don’t know the answer to a question right away, “I don’t know, but let me find it out for you” is their default approach. They strive to be accepting of their strengths as well as their limitations, and know how to interact with both empathy and confidence. When they feel strongly about their opinions they dig in their heels, yet they also know how to help their peers truly shine.
At Loop, we believe that flexibility and choice are what allow you to do your best work. With our Blended Working Environment, you have options ranging from joining our HQ office (in Columbus, Ohio), opting into a Hub (a location with 4+ team members), or staying totally secluded (our version of remote). Our team is spread across the United States, select provinces in Canada (Ontario & British Columbia), and the United Kingdom. Wherever you live, you can create the work environment that best matches your preferences and lifestyle.
Our Tech Stack:
AWS (EC2s, Serverless architecture, Redis, DynamoDB, identity management), Docker, Kubernetes, Laravel, Terraform, CircleCI, ArgoCD, Elasticsearch, Datadog.
We’ve laid out the experience and skills that are important for your success on this team, and we will be asking for specific examples to better understand your background.

What you’ll do:

  • Build, refactor, optimize, and maintain our infrastructure
  • Work with Product Engineers to triage and debug a wide range of issues
  • Work with Security Engineers to keep our platform secure
  • Provide mentorship and 1-1 pairing to your teammates
  • Identify areas of improvements in our current stack and put forth proposals for remediation
  • Define technical direction for upcoming projects and break those down with the team
  • Collaborate with Embedded DevOps and DevEx Engineers in pairings and team ceremonies where needed
  • Debug issues in the CI/CD pipeline

What you’ll work on:

  • current project:
  • Migrate an existing application into Kubernetes
  • next-up:
  • Network refactoring - rework our existing network according to industry standards and internal goals
  • Environment parity - update, standardize, create lower level environments
  • IAM policies - define, socialize, and implement policies around provisioning access
  • Elasticache refactoring - optimize application caching and the associated infrastructure
  • future plans:
  • Long-term projects to perfect our Disaster Recovery and Observability posture

Your experience:

  • We appreciate that different humans solve problems in different ways, so we don’t expect you to fit every point of this list of requirements. At the same time, for this role, at least 5+ years of experience with AWS as well as with Kubernetes is a must.
  • 7+ years in DevOps, SRE, or Cloud Engineering roles
  • 5+ years of experience using Amazon Web Services
  • 5+ years experience with Kubernetes, including leading migrations of existing applications as well as deploying new Kubernetes clusters in a production environment
  • Some experience with Terraform or other IaC software, PHP (Laravel framework), Datadog, and DevSecOps in general
  • You have led several complex projects that involved coordinating effort across multiple teams
  • You know how to break down and track your work, and how to keep stakeholders informed in a manner that ensures a high level of independence
  • You are aware of the limitations of the industry when it comes to both technical and cultural diversity, and you can speak to your approach to create an environment where all your teammates are given the opportunity to shine
  • You are able to share examples giving and receiving critical feedback to/from your peers and your leaders
  • Your rollback plans are just as meticulous as your rollout plans, and you shudder at the thought of making a change in production without using an effective change management process

In a perfect world, Loop wouldn't exist. If we had our way, we'd live in a world where we're mindful about how we consume, we love every product we own, and we share values with the brands who create them. In reality, commerce isn't perfect and often breaks. Loop creates second chances.
We're starting by revolutionizing the post-purchase experience. We've taken one of the most fragile commerce interactions - returns - and turned it into something consumers actually love, and that deepens our connection to brands and products.
We take connection seriously on the inside, too. We're building a work experience that allows you to Be A Human First and prioritizes empathy and wellbeing. We view Loop as a special place in your career to shape the future of an industry and become a better person while doing it. You can grow faster here in a shorter amount of time - we'll give you space and trust you to fill it.
