The Role

BuzzFeed is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Director of Accounting to join our team based in our New York office. This is a full-time, hybrid position, with the expectation of commuting to our New York City office at least twice a week. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a multi-entity global environment and exceptional analytic, management, communication, and technology skills. The role will report to the Assistant Controller.

You’ll play a key role in driving accuracy, efficiency, and engagement across our global accounting organization, empowering your team to grow and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.

You Will

  • Lead and mentor the Global Operating Expense accounting teams, fostering collaboration and continuous improvements.
  • Oversee the monthly and quarterly financial close process for Global Operating Expense functions while providing timely and accurate reporting including flux analyses to senior management.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Own capitalized software and oversee payroll accounting, including salaries, commissions, bonuses, and benefits.
  • Oversee end-to-end Procure-to-Pay process, including vendor onboarding and reviewing new vendor contracts, invoice processing, intercompany cash transfers, and payment execution.
  • Own fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, and asset tracking in accordance with company policy and accounting standards.
  • Enhance existing company procedures to align with best practices around Global Operating Expense procedures. Identify opportunities to streamline and increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Communicate information and prepare reporting for management in a concise manner and work with individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Serve as an escalation point to resolve problems or inconsistencies, ensuring effective problem-solving with a continuous process-improvement mindset.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including IT to implement process and technology enhancements.
  • Partner with FP&A, HR, and Legal on financial processes, tax implications, and compliance matters.
  • Collaborate with the SOX team to ensure controls are designed and operating effectively across all responsibilities.
  • Coordinate auditor requests for quarterly reviews and year-end audits.
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships.

You Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field. CPA certification is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public company experience
  • Proven experience leading and developing teams, especially in a dynamic, fast paced global environment.
  • Must be proficient in Excel and have experience with Netsuite and Concur
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to think outside the box, comfortable with ambiguity and providing suggestions and guidance
  • Excellent organization skills and superior attention to detail including the ability to manipulate and interpret large amounts of data
  • Self-starter, independently motivated with a proactive approach and the ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
