Our mission is to help every business owner thrive, by providing financial insight and peace of mind in one seamless platform. From creatives to chiropractors, Bench helps thousands of small business owners and entrepreneurs master their financial lives. Because understanding your finances should be three things: simple, effortless, and affordable.

A letter from our Director of Engineering:

Dear future Benchmate,

We are looking for a talented Senior Engineering Manager to join the Engineering team at Bench. We are a small, passionate team dedicated to improving the lives of small business owners through modern processes and technologies.

As a member of the Engineering Management team at Bench, you will be critical in delivering meaningful product features that empower small business owners. You will work closely with our Product and Design teams to solve complex problems. I will empower you to own your team and processes to deliver customer value as efficiently as possible.

Our engineering team at Bench prides itself on our commitment to personal and professional growth, constant adaptation, and agility. You’ll have the opportunity to be deeply involved in upholding and supporting that commitment as we continue to grow and evolve our team.

As the Director of Engineering, I aim to ensure that every engineer at Bench has an incredible growth trajectory. I can't wait to work alongside you as we make a real impact on the lives of small business owners.

So, if you're looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity to grow your skills, join us at Bench! We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

David Morgantini, Director of Engineering.

What you’ll get up to:

  • Create Alignment: You’ll be working with product leaders to understand and align on proposed product solutions and product roadmaps.
  • Foster Growth: You’ll be responsible for the growth of one or more teams of engineers through structured career conversations, mentorship, and continuous conversations.
  • Grow our team: You’ll be contributing to and participating in hiring conversations and decisions.
  • Deliver Value: Your focus will be on creating and facilitating systems that lead to high performing teams focused on delivering software that makes a difference.
  • Strengthen Culture: You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the culture on your team is consistent with our principles.

What you'll need:

  • Resonance with our Bench and Engineering Team principles. Our engineering managers are expected to nurture and strengthen our principles and help the teams follow them even when under pressure.
  • A technical background - you may not have been a senior engineer, but you have an understanding of technology, building products, maintaining products, and speaking about technical problems and solutions in business terms. Our engineering managers are not expected to write code, but you are expected to be part of the team that discusses potential technical solutions to product problems.
  • A passion for leading - leadership requires us to take a stand for what we believe the future can be, and then to help others see themselves in that future. Our engineering managers are expected to provide coaching, mentorship and leadership to their teams and to their close collaborators in the product and design team.
  • A dissatisfaction with status quo - we are always looking to change and improve, ‘we’ve always done it this way’ isn’t part of your vocabulary. Our engineering managers are expected to critically evaluate processes and projects to ensure that we are delivering the best possible solutions and ideas to our customers.
  • A willingness to drive positive change - it’s not enough to be dissatisfied, you will need to understand how to create and drive positive change in your team and throughout the organization. Our engineering managers are expected to make small changes regularly in order to get ahead of problems and ensure their teams are consistently adapting to changing business conditions.
  • A technology leadership toolkit - you may not have “engineering manager” on your resume but you’ll need to be able to draw on a toolkit built through leadership experience. Our engineering managers are expected to provide leadership in one or more teams and streams, they are able to flex their leadership to cover direct team leadership as well as manage prioritization and roadmap exercises with direct collaborators on other teams.
  • A demonstrable drive to grow - fostering growth is what we do here, in ourselves and in our reports. Our managers are expected to elevate engineers at all levels to help them achieve the full extent of their capabilities and growth.

What you'll get:

  • At Bench we share information freely and openly whenever possible. The salary range for this role is $168,000-211,000 per year, depending on experience.
  • In addition, we offer an extended benefits package that includes paid vacation, paid flex days, stock options, and full health, dental, and vision.
  • You’ll get access to Inkblot Therapy’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EAP) that offers counseling and support, for you and family members, as well as professional development coaching, financial advice, legal advice and much more.
  • Bench has a number of Affinity Groups - groups of people who have shared identities and experiences! The purpose of these groups is to support underrepresented Benchmates and amplify their voices.
  • If you live in BC’s Lower Mainland, you have the opportunity to work at home or in our downtown office location, depending on your preference! If you’re interested in remote only, we currently focus our hiring efforts in the following provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
  • We provide solutions to bring all teams together for collaboration and connection.
  • Regardless of how many days you decide to visit the office, you’ll have access to our Home Office Setup Fund to ensure that you have everything you need to work comfortably from home, from day one.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to work from somewhere other than your home province for up to 90 days in a 12-month period.

Everyone has their own unique talents. Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications outlined above, tell us why you’d be a great fit for this role in your application.

We believe that unchecked biases disproportionately impact the most marginalized people in society—including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or other marginalized communities because we believe that without you, we are all less. If you are selected for an interview and require support during the process, including disability accommodation, we'll give you the opportunity to tell us when we contact you.
